Introduction
An analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is an electronic circuit that converts continuous signals to discrete digital numbers. The reverse operation is performed by a digital-to-analog converter (DAC). Typically, ADC is an electronic device that converts an input analog voltage to a digital number.
The digital output may be using different coding schemes, such as binary and two's complement binary. However, some non-electronic or only partially electronic devices can also be considered as ADC. In electronics, DAC is a device for converting a digital code to an analog signal. DACs are the interface between the abstract digital world and the analog real life. Simple switches, a network of resistors, current sources or capacitors may implement this conversion.
